Delhi – Jaipur – Agra
A 7-day trip to discover the best known cities of India: Delhi, the capital and administrative and commercial center of the country; Agra, with its Taj Mahal, symbol of love that never dies; Jaipur, the pink city, capital of Rajastan. A visit to the Jhinjha school is scheduled to get in touch with the children and villagers and support a social cause aimed at rebuilding the old school building. At the end of the itinerary it is possible to make extensions to complement the trip: Khajuraho, known for its superb Hindu temples, Varanasi the sacred city par excellence or Kathmandu, thus entering Nepal and discovering its immense charm. The journey requires a good spirit of adaptation for some long car transfers.

Arrival in Delhi. Handling of entry and customs formalities. Meeting with the local assistant and transfer to the hotel. Rooms immediately available. The first settlement in the Delhi area dates back to the ninth century, with the mythical city of Indraprashtra, capital of the Pandavas, the Hindu heroes whose deeds are found in the epic poem of the Mahabharata. A period of feudalism followed with the rule of the rajaput, aristocratic Muslim warriors. Over the centuries seven cities were built which underwent several raids from the surrounding territories. Beginning in 1526 Humayun and his skilled successors extended the empire beyond the borders of Delhi, giving rise to an attempt to reunify the country. The eighth city was built when Emperor Shah Jahan moved the capital from Agra to Delhi. The construction of the main monuments of the city dates back to this period. With the arrival of the British Calcutta was chosen as the capital and only in 1911 was the capital brought back to Delhi. On February 9, 1931 the English viceroy inaugurated New Delhi on a project by Sir Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker. The new city included government buildings, the palace housing the National Museum, two churches and most of the residences that are part of the representation area. In 1947 Delhi became the capital of Independent India. In the afternoon visit to the new city: the central districts where the government buildings are located; the India Gate, arch erected in memory of the First World War, the Parliament Building, the Qutab Minar, one of the tallest stone towers in India, was started in 1199 by Qutab ud-din and completed by his successors. In the late afternoon, if the weather permits, visit a Sikh temple. Dinner and overnight.
Breakfast. . In the morning visit of the old city (Shahajahanabad), built by the powerful Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, was once surrounded by a red sandstone wall with fourteen access doors. Fascinating and picturesque maze of narrow streets, it is divided into two parts by the Via dell'Argento, a colorful and lively succession of shops and bazaars. In the same area you can visit the Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in the world, built in 1650, it has a more severe structure than the buildings for civil use wanted by the emperor. Free afternoon. Overnight. P>
Breakfast. Departure for Agra (255 kms - about 5 hours). On the way stop and visit Sikandra, the remains of the ancient city commissioned by the Afghan ruler Sikander Lodi. The imposing funeral monument of Emperor Akbar was built on the site, surrounded by a 75-hectare garden, in the Indo-Islamic style, erected according to distinctive features that intended to symbolize the beliefs of religious tolerance of this great sovereign. Inside the complex are the ruins of the Baradi Palace, built in 1495 100 meters north of the foundation stone of the ancient city, expropriated in 1623 by Jehangir who erected the tomb of his mother there Arrival in Agra, a city founded in 1501 who experienced the period of maximum development and splendor under the emperor Akbar and his successors who adorned it with mausoleums, forts and mosques. Arrival in Agra, accommodation in the rooms. Dinner and overnight.
Breakfast. In the morning visit of the city that stands on the right bank of the Yamuna river, in the center is the Red Fort, to the southeast the Taj Mahal, to the north the old city to the south west the most modern portion of the city. The Taj Mahal (closed on Friday) is one of the seven wonders in the world which stands in the middle of a lush garden. Its beauty transcends all description. Built by Mughal Emperor Shahjehan in 1631 in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died during the birth of his 14th son after 17 years of marriage. To erect the monument precious stones of all kinds were collected, pearls, corals and were called from all over the realm 20.00 among the best craftsmen, who took 22 years to complete this masterpiece. Continue to the Red Fort, a vast building that overlooks the Yamuna river, started by Emperor Akbar and then enlarged by subsequent emperors, where you can visit the public and private audience halls. Not all monuments preserved inside can be visited. Lunch. In the afternoon visit of the Itmad daulah mausoleum. Return to hotel, dinner and overnight. P>
Breakfast. In the morning departure for Jaipur with a stop along the way to the splendid Fatehpur Sikri, the ancient capital of the Mughal empire under Akbar the Great. The city rises on a sandstone hill, is uninhabited and is therefore known as the "ghost town". It is certainly one of the best preserved and representative archaeological complexes of Mughal art. Arrival in Jaipur, accommodation in the rooms, dinner and overnight. P>
Breakfast. Full day dedicated to visiting this beautiful city. It was built in 1728 by the warrior astronomer Maharaja Jai Singh. In 1883, on the occasion of Prince Albert's visit, the buildings were painted pink in his honor. The first visit (on elephant's back) is at Amber Fort, 10 kilometers from Jaipur, built in the 17th century. Then visit the city and the Observatory, even more interesting than that of Delhi, full of instruments of exceptional size and where there is the "Sancrat" (the Prince of the Sundial), a 90-foot tall gnomon. Continuation of the visits with a photographic stop in front of the Hawa Mahal or "Palace of the Wind", also built with the "desert stone, which stands on one of the main streets of the city, in reality it is not a palace but an extraordinary facade with 953 windows that were used by the ladies to observe the outside world, elaborate and imaginative but at the same time a clear example of oriental art.The visits end with the Palazzo del Maharaja dating back to 1570. Return to the hotel. Dinner and overnight.
